Group Exercise

It's called aerobics and the point is to raise your heart rate while maintaining oxygen usage in your system, unlike weight lifting where you exert a lot of energy for a short time. It is like running, where breathing is imporant.
An aerobic class is where a bunch of people follow a leader through a series of movements for hour. If that sounds boring think about walking on a treadmill for the same time. That's what I was doing when I started to work out. As I walked I looked into the groupX room and saw a bunch of people (mostly girls) jumping around to music and thought, 'That' might be a more fun place to be.
So I tried it. In the back corner. And the first time I thought I was going to die. 50 minutes of high energy moves non stop takes a little getting use to. But the instructor had such personality and the music and the fact that other people were doing it made me stick it out.
Here's how it works. The instructor cue's the action just a couple of beats ahead so it is like, You say, I do. On and on. The routines match the music so it is a dance. Aerobics is like square dancing alone. Fast.
Now I like step aerobics. The step is about a yard across and 6 inches high. Up and down you go, across, turn, over, lunge, reverse, whatever. The moves that a good step instructor can devise are amazing. The best invent routines that will take several classes to learn. That will keep you coming back. A challenge.
There are other types of aerobic workouts patterned after boxing, or martial arts. Some are low impact (less strenuous) or geared towards biking or weight training.
The thing is. This is a group thing. Social. People talk before and after so it is not so much like work. But you are doing something good for yourself, and having a good time too.
