The weather

Watching Frances rip the guts out of Florida just after Charlie opened the wound got me thinking about the easy time we have here in LV. So what do we have here to deal with? Well, at least one flash flood a year. Last year's ripped past poorly designed flood basins and made for some great footage for the local news, and created work for some road contractors but only a few homes got flooded and nobody died. This year was a duh; just traffic delays.
Dust storms are unpleasant at times and about once a decade a summer hale storm brakes a few windows. Earthquakes? No. Tornados? No. Cold? Every few years it drops into the teens for a few hours for a few days, but about fourty degrees is the usual winter low. Oh yes it gets HOT!
Today pushed 100 but the +110 days are rare and summer hovers in the low 100's , and there are a lot of 70 - 80 days. Truly other than Hawaii we have mild weather like nowhere else.
This is a lot of the reason so many people move here but there is a dark side. Traffic is awful. Crime is a growth industry. A day without a fatal road accident is rare. Murder is so common it rarely makes the front page and robbery won't get a mention unless it involves a home invasion with injury. Gang activity is a major source of crime and violence.
This was once a safe place to live but I now have to keep my doors locked.
Next time I'll write about gambling, and later, the bright side of Las Vegas.
